[2017 ARML] -- Updated itinerary

Dear all,

Here is an updated itinerary.  Most of the changes concern the dorm; we are staying in Dayton Hall.

See (many of) you tomorrow!

[2017 ARML] -- ARML Bus Information

Hi everyone,

This is important information about the ARML bus. (If you're flying to ARML, feel free to disregard this email.)

The bus will load at the San Jose Diridon (Caltrain) Station. Once you're there, look for bus loading spot #3 near the entrance to the train station. Here's a map: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/documents/busmap.png The spot labeled X1 is our busloading location. Please do not park in the parking spots labeled "Caltrain Employee Parking", marked on the map with yellow and black X's. If needed, you can stop briefly in the parking lot labeled X2 on the map to unload. If you have trouble finding the bus, please call me at 541-206-7651.

All students should arrive for bus loading at 10:30am on Thursday. Do not be late. Once the bus is loaded, it will leave without you if you are not there.

You may wish to bring games and movies for the bus. We will only have movies if someone brings them! Also, feel free to coordinate games, movies, etc on the SFBA ARML facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/bayareaarml/ If you're not in the group, request to be added and I'll add you. :)

We have a team tradition of wearing our oldest ARML t-shirts on the bus. I will be wearing a shirt from 2008, and I'm excited to see your ARML shirts from past years.

If you have any questions about the bus, please ask! See you soon!

Best,
Moor

[2017 ARML] -- We have a t-shirt plan!

That was easy.  We have someone who can bring the t-shirts to the bus, so all of you can rest easy knowing that there will be t-shirts in Las Vegas.  Woo hoo.

[2017 ARML] -- Would you like to have your ARML shirt this year?

Hi everyone,

So it all comes down to this week!  I'm in Las Vegas now, Silas will be arriving tomorrow, and Kendra will be arriving Wednesday.  We'll have everything ready for all of you once you get here.  We'll hand you a water bottle when you arrive; don't let this bottle get empty or let it out of your sight.  It is very hot and dry in Las Vegas, and you need to stay hydrated.  Please help remind each other to drink plenty of water as well.

One thing I need some help with: Ted Alper (our former Head Coach until about 2007) is helping us get the t-shirts made, and he will pick them up on Wednesday.  The thing is, we need a way to get the t-shirts and a microphone/speaker setup to the bus on Thursday.  Is there anyone who will be driving to the Caltrain station on Thursday morning who can drop by Ted's house in Palo Alto on Wednesday to pick up these items and bring them to meet the bus on Thursday?  This is kind of important, because it would be really super awesome if we actually had t-shirts at ARML this year.  So don't just sit around thinking someone else will volunteer and then show up at ARML and we don't have shirts for anyone; if you can help with this, please send an email ASAP so we can make sure everyone has team t-shirts for Saturday!

[2017 ARML] -- ARML 2017 Itinerary (take 1) - plus alternate spots

Dear all,

Attached is the ARML itinerary as it currently stands.

You'll notice some "TBD"s in it; that's for information we don't know yet.  I'll be sending an updated itinerary on Tuesday or Wednesday with the rest of the information--mostly just what dorm we're staying in, which will affect where some things happen.

Some further information about events on the itinerary, mostly for people who have not been to ARML before:

1. There are two awards ceremonies on Saturday afternoon: The big ARML one at 1:45 when we find out how our teams did, and a smaller one just for our team at 3:45 where we celebrate our own accomplishments.  Parents are welcome at both if they've traveled to Las Vegas.  If you're flying home on Saturday, bring all your stuff with you to the 3:45 team meeting, as the bus will take you to the airport immediately after.

2. On Saturday night, the bus will take anyone who's interested to the Stratosphere to get dinner and go up the tower for a fantastic view of Las Vegas.  There's a small additional cost (in the neighborhood of $20-25 per person, plus the cost of dinner).  The bus will return in time to catch most of casino night.  Departure time will be announced at the team meeting Saturday afternoon.

3. Casino Night has been a traditional part of Saturday evening for the past several years.  We set up casino games in the dorm, give you chips to play with (there is no cost, obviously; all the money is fake), and then you can turn the chips in for prizes.  At the end, we auction off some extra-awesome prizes.  Stay tuned for a possible new game making its debut this year...

FINALLY...
We still have two alternate spots that have not been filled.  If you have friends or classmates that want to go to ARML, we will register them for free (they just have to pay the cost of their flights on Friday and Saturday) if they're willing to fill one of these alternate spots.  They still get to participate in the whole contest, just with a team composed of students from several different regions.  If you know anyone who might be interested, please have them email arml@mathleague.org immediately, and we'll let them know what they need to do.

See you next week in Vegas!

[2017 ARML] -- Reminder: final practice on Sunday!

Hi everyone,

Our next (and final) practice will be this Sunday 2:00pm-5:30pm at Stanford, building 380. Note that it's a longer practice than usual. Please make an extra effort to come to practice (on time) for this final weekend before ARML. For details, see https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/

During the final 15-30 minutes of practice, we'll stop doing math and have a team meeting about the trip. This is also your chance to ask questions about whatever is on your mind. :)

You can find practice materials from past practices online on the practice website. As usual, username=sfba and password=arml. You may wish to see the practice notes page for this week on what we covered each week. In particular, those of you on A1 should avoid looking at two of the team rounds. :)

Best,
Moor

[2017 ARML] -- Practice this weekend

Hi all,

It's that time of week again... this is your reminder that this weekend we'll have practice on Sunday, 2pm-5pm, at Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto. (See the website https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/ for more info.)

I understand that there is a conflict with ProCo this weekend. For those of you at ProCo this weekend, you should still be able to come to most of practice, and I encourage you to do so. Your team needs you to be at practice. As always, if you need to miss a practice for any (good) reason, please make sure you fill out the form on the website before practice.

I've uploaded practice materials from the past two weeks to the practice website. As usual, the username is sfba and the password is arml.

Note that this practice is your last opportunity to hand in a permission form in person -- we cannot accept permission forms at the final practice. If you have not yet turned in a permission form, please bring your (notarized) form to this weekend's practice and hand it to me.

See you this weekend!

Best,
Moor

[2017 ARML] -- T-shirt update

Okay everyone, the crowd has spoken and we will be going with the 17-gon design this year.  Thanks Freya for a great submission!  If you are interested in purchasing extra shirts, you must purchase them online by May 21. You can go to http://mathleague.org/armlshirts.php to place your order. Remember that these are adult sizes. You will be issued one t-shirt corresponding to your team assignment and the size you indicated when you signed up for ARML, but if you think you may have given us an incorrect size (or not realized they were adult sizes rather than youth sizes), feel free to email us to clarify.

Also, it looks like we may have a couple of extra spots available for alternates (moving up to a numbered team if there is space) at deeply discounted rates because part of the fee will be paid by the people who have told us they can no longer make it.  If you know of someone who is interested in filling one of these positions, please have them get in contact with us ASAP.

[2017 ARML] -- t-shirt design update

Turns out the original survey didn't render the design properly for the 7s shirt.  Here is what the front and back should look like.

[2017 ARML] -- correction

...and by "practice Sunday" in that previous email, i clearly meant "practice Saturday".  Remember, this weekends practice is on Saturday, not Sunday.

[2017 ARML] -- T-shirt voting and WWTBAM

Okay, our t-shirt designs are in and voting is up.  Deadline to vote is midnight Sunday.  You can see the designs and vote at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RB3HBQW.  Please spend some time (no more than 5 minutes) at practice Sunday trying to come to a consensus within your teams as to what color you want your team's shirt to be, and what your backup color will be if another team wants the same color.  A1 and A2 are guaranteed pink and black respectively if they want those colors, so if A1 picks pink or A2 picks black they do not need to pick a backup color.

Also, if anyone else would like to be considered for Who Wants To Be A Mathematician, please let us know by midnight tomorrow.  Depending on how many of you are interested, we may have an amusing tryout or some hoops to jump through.  Remember in order to participate you will need to attend an orientation Friday afternoon.

[2017 ARML] -- Practice schedule

Hi everyone,

Sorry about the delays in getting practice times and locations online. All remaining practices are now listed on the practice website: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/. The practice absence form is also updated with more dates. Fill it out *before* practice if you need to miss practice, but please make sure to provide a good reason... your team needs you to come in order to have effective practices. :)

Note that this weekend's practice is on Saturday, May 13, 2pm-5pm in Pleasanton. In particular, we've made sure to leave Mother's Day free for everyone. :)

Quick reminder for anyone who hasn't yet turned in permission forms: you can do this at the next two practices, and you can find information about it here: http://mathleague.org/armljoin.php

Best,
Moor

[2017 ARML] -- Update re: permission slips

Hey everyone,
Don't pay attention to the permission slip column in the spreadsheet I just sent. It hasn't been updated recently. You know if you've turned it in, and if you haven't, well, turn it in already!

[2017 ARML] -- Team rosters and transportation and stuff

Okay folks, the moment you've been waiting for.  Or dreading.  Whatever.  We've set our team rosters for ARML.  We've got 6 full teams plus an entire team's worth of coaches.  110 of us in all.  Attached to this email is a roster that tells what team everyone is on (coaches for students are 8's and coaches for coaches are 9's).  It also indicates whether we have your permission slip, what your transportation plans are both directions, and which nights you will be staying in the dorms.  Please look this over and let us know IMMEDIATELY at arml@mathleague.org if anything looks incorrect.  Our final housing roster is due to ARML on Tuesday, so this all needs to be final by then.  Note that we actually have more than 15 students on some teams.  Invariably we will need to relegate a couple of students to the alternate teams, and this will be based on practice attendance.  So please show up to practice!

One thing to note is that we are still over capacity on the return bus by a few students.  So I'm going to open up one final rebate offer to try to entice students to take a flight home from ARML:  Anyone who schedules a RETURN flight on one of the approved flights and sends us your confirmation by midnight Monday will be eligible for a $50 rebate.  If you want to fly both ways, that's cool too, but at this point the rebate offer is for the return flight only.

Also, in place of (hopefully not in addition to) that horrible horrible guest speaker about casino promotions, ARML will be running something called "Who Wants to Be a Mathematician" on Friday night after the power question and before the pizza.  We can enter a team of three, at least one of whom must be a girl.  If you are interested in being considered for this (you must be able to attend an orientation at 3pm on Friday June 2), send an email to arml@mathleague.org by the end of the week and we'll figure out where to go from there.

Finally, watch for a t-shirt survey soon.  We will send that out as soon as it's ready and will give you a small window of opportunity to vote on the design.  We will all wear the same design, but with each team in a different color.  Your team will get to vote on its color, with A1 voting on which shade of pink and A2 voting on which shade of black to wear.  :)

That's all for now.  #threepeat #desperatelyseekingsecond #A3JVforthewin

[2017 ARML] -- Practice this weekend!

Hi everyone,

We'll have practice again this weekend, same time and location as last week: Sunday 2pm-5pm at Cubberley Community Center. I will post team (and room) assignments outside of room A2 shortly before the start of practice.

If you cannot come to practice, fill out the practice absence form on the practice website with a good reason, *before* practice. Note that placement on elite teams is dependent on consistent practice attendance -- your team needs you to be there in order to have an effective practice!

If you miss practice, you can find the past practice materials online at the practice website. To view them, use username=sfba and password=arml.

For those of you who have not submitted permission forms: we need your paperwork in order to take you to ARML! You can turn in notarized forms at practice.

Best,
Moor

Re: [2017 ARML] -- Check your ARML travel information!

Hi Hong,

I'm sorry, but we will almost certainly not be able to accommodate you on the bus due to a severe lack of space.  I believe all of our dorm spots are spoken for as of now as well, although if you're willing to drive a van in parallel with the bus, we might be able to get you a dorm spot.

We will be selecting THREE elite teams this year, and we will announce at Sunday's practice what team everyone is assigned to.  ARML has initiated a new category of competition this year, for JV teams consisting of all tenth graders and below; our A3 team will be designated a JV team and should be a top contender for the inaugural JV championship.  Remember that if you are assigned to an elite team, you could be demoted if you fail to attend practices without a legitimate excuse.  Please attend practice, especially if you are on an elite team.  Help Us Win Second Place This Year (tm). #threepeat #desperatelyseekingsecond #A3JVforthewin

Because we are bringing more teams than usual, we are still looking for some students to take one of the approved flights so we can balance our transportation between flights and the bus (see our previous email or the email archives on our website for details).  So we will be extending the deadline for the $100 refund until midnight on May the 4th (be with you).  This is also the deadline for t-shirt design submissions (see our previous email for more details).

Also, we are looking for a parent who would be willing to take the Oakland flights and serve as a chaperone both on the flights and at ARML.  We may also be looking for a parent to drive a rental van to Las Vegas if we have more students than we can fit on the bus.  Please let us know if you would be willing to volunteer for either of these roles; if you are selected we will pay for your expenses at ARML.

Practice materials from past practices can also be found there, with the following username and password:
Username: sfba
Password: arml

You can submit your notarized permission slips at practice.

In related news, t-shirt design submissions are due very soon! Please see http://sfbaarml2017.blogspot.com/2017/04/arml-update-practices-flights-and-more.html for a description of what's required in a t-shirt design. :)

See you tomorrow!

[2017 ARML] New flights and first wave of elite team members

Okay everyone, our priority deadline has passed, and the coaches have selected our first wave of 15 students for the A1/A2 teams.  Please note that we will be finalizing our team selection within the next week-ish, so if you have not yet paid for ARML there is still time to join the team officially, but you need to do it soon.  We should be able to accept onto the team anyone who completes payment by May 1, but after that we cannot guarantee any spots on any teams.  Obviously there are fewer spots available now on the elite teams, but that does not mean it is impossible to make it onto one of the elite teams.  In fact, if we get enough superstars on the roster, we are thinking of making a competitively-selected A3 team as well!  So spread the word to your friends who haven't signed up yet.  We are particularly looking for USAMO and USAJMO qualifiers who aren't signed up yet; with enough solid recruiting, the Holy Grail (a second place A2 team) could be within our grasp this year!  Help Us Win Second Place This Year (tm).

In other news, we are opening up a Sacramento flight and a San Jose flight to go along with the SFO and OAK flights we approved earlier.  Same deal:  For any student who purchases one of these EXACT round trips and sends us confirmation at arml@mathleague.org by midnight on April 30, we will refund $100 of your ARML fee because we will likely be able to sell your seat on the bus to someone else.

SACRAMENTO
Southwest 1941, June 2
SMF-LAS, 5:35-6:55am
Southwest 5371, June 3
LAS-SMF, 7:35-9:00pm

SAN JOSE

SJC-LAS, 6:30-7:50am
Southwest 5601/4372, June 3
LAS-LAX-SJC, 6:00-9:35pm

Anyway, here are the 15 students we've selected for the elite teams so far.  I can promise you that not all of these students will be on A1, but I can also promise that they will all be on either A1 or A2 even if we open up a third elite team.

[2017 ARML] -- Practice update, ARML Local on Sunday

Hi everyone,

Our next practice will be this Sunday, April 23, 2pm-6pm, at Room A2, Cubberley Community Center, in Palo Alto. You can find information about this and subsequent practices at the practice website: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/.

We will be participating in ARML Local at this practice. This is an official ARML-style competition written by ARML. Since this is an official contest, please ensure that you arrive on time (and budget some time to park). Additionally, note that this practice is longer than usual in order for us to have sufficient time to complete the contest.

Simon will be in charge of assembling teams for the ARML Local competition. For anyone wanting to be placed onto an elite team for ARML Local, you need to check in with Simon outside of room A2 by 2:00pm sharp. People who arrive after team selection is complete will be assigned to teams in the order of when they arrive. Note: these teams are just for ARML Local and have no relation to future team selection for the ARML contest.

As a reminder, if you can't make it to practice on a particular day, fill out the Practice Absence Form on the website before that practice, with a good reason. In particular, there is no need to email me about missing a practice, and I do not accept practice excuses over email. Unexcused absences may negatively affect placement on elite teams.

I am posting all materials (problems and solutions) used at practices on the practice website. In order to view this material, use username=sfba and password=arml.

If you ever miss any announcements, you can view our email archive.

Let me know if you have any questions. See you on Sunday! :)

Best,
Moor

[2017 ARML] - Practice on Saturday, and other updates

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another year of ARML! I am organizing our team's practices for this year. Practices will be held weekly until ARML, on a mix of Saturday and Sunday afternoons. All information can be found at our practice website: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/.

Our first practice will be this Saturday, April 15, 2pm-5pm, at 251 Dwinelle Hall in UC Berkeley. You can find information about this and subsequent practices at the practice website.

ARML is a team activity, and as such, it is really important that everyone come to practice whenever possible -- the team depends on everybody's active participation. If you can't make it to practice on a particular day, fill out the Practice Absence Form on the website before that practice, with a good reason. Unexcused absences may negatively affect placement on elite teams.

I've heard that traveling to practices can be a challenge, so we've set up a Carpool Form on the website to assist you in setting up carpools. You can fill out that form to express interest in carpooling. The form responses are public, so you can view responses and contact each other to set up carpooling.

If you ever miss any announcements, you can view our email archive.

One more thing: Join the SFBA ARML facebook page! If you're not in the group, request to be added and I'll add you. :)

Again, all information about practices can be found at https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/... check there if you have any questions! If you have a question that's not answered on the website, let me know and I'll be happy to help. :)

Best,
Moor

ARML update - practices, flights and more

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few notes you should be aware of. Please read this entire email.

PRACTICES

Our first practice will be this Saturday, April 15, at UC Berkeley. Please see https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2017ARML/ for more details. Practice dates and locations will be updated on Moor's site as they are confirmed. If your school is able to host a practice, please contact us so we can follow up with you.

The following weekend we will take the ARML Local contest at practice, so watch for more details on that as well.

FLIGHTS

We are starting to coordinate transportation for ARML this year, and we're ready to open up the first two flight options. Here they are:

SAN FRANCISCO
Southwest 1900, June 2
SFO-LAS, 6:05-7:35am
Southwest 404, June 3
LAS-SFO, 6:15-7:45pm

OAKLAND
Southwest 1096, June 2
OAK-LAS, 5:55-7:20am
Southwest 2479, June 3
LAS-OAK, 6:35-8:00pm

For any student who purchases one of these EXACT round trips and sends us confirmation at arml@mathleague.org by midnight on April 30, we will refund $100 of your ARML fee because we will likely be able to sell your seat on the bus to someone else. Please note that the fares are likely to go up as people start buying tickets, so purchase them early if you're planning to fly. Also note that this $100 refund will not necessarily apply to other flights we open up or to purchases made after April 30; if we approve new flights or extend the deadline for claiming refunds I will post details, but DO NOT ask about other Bay Area flights for now. Any students who are interested in flying out of Sacramento should contact us to see about flight options. Remember, NO student goes to ARML unless it is on the bus or one of the flights we approve, as we need adult supervision at all times on the trip.

For parents interested in going to Las Vegas, you may feel free to book any flight you choose and to make your own arrangements for accommodations in Las Vegas. If you are traveling independently to Las Vegas, we'd still like to know your transportation details so we can coordinate various aspects of the trip with you (for instance, we may be able to assist you with ground transportation, or we may ask you to volunteer to chaperone one of the flights if you are taking one of the approved flights). Any parents interested in riding the bus or staying in the dorms on campus should contact us for more details regarding cost and availability.

T-SHIRTS

We need a team t-shirt for ARML -- and you have a chance to design it! Any student who wishes to submit a design is very welcome to do so; we will vote on the designs in in mid-May.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 4th. Voting will begin on Tuesday May 5th and run for one week. Once the voting begins, we will not be able to add late submissions.

Here are the ground rules -- please read them carefully, even the ones at the end!

Include the words "SFBA" or "San Francisco Bay Area" or both
Include the words "NorCal" or "Northern California" or both
Include the words "ARML" or "American Regions Mathematics League" or both
Include at least the year (2017). You *could* also include the specific days (June 2-3), and/or "UNLV" or "Las Vegas, Nevada" or "University of Nevada, Las Vegas" or some variant of this.
Do NOT include anything that might be considered offensive to other students, parents, teachers, or, well, anyone. This has never been a problem in the past, but we do explicitly reserve the right to censor submissions that fail to meet this criterion.
Do NOT use copyrighted material, unless you own the copyright!
Also, please be realistic about what your design will look like on a t-shirt

Use a maximum of 4 colors (and different shades count as different colors! This will be silk-screened, so subtle blending and mixing of these 4 colors is out; On the other hand, half-tones are ok.) Front and back count separately -- that is, you could have 2 colors on each side, or 3 on one side and 1 on the other, or simply have JUST front artwork with 4 colors. You don't need to count the background color of the shirt

It would be helpful if you can produce your design in a high-resolution version (preferably TIFF, PSD, or EPS formats, the sort of thing you can do with Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET, etc.) for the printers. Low-resolution designs do NOT look good on t-shirts! If you don't have the tools to do this, our t-shirt printing company will have their art staff redo your design in a higher-resolution format if you can't, but there's no guarantee it will be exactly the same.

Email us (arml@mathleague.org) your files, the names of those who worked on the design, and a name for the design for the voting.

TEAM SELECTION

We have decided to extend the priority deadline for elite team selection to April 22 in order to give students attending the state championship a chance to claim the discounted fee (see our website for details on that) without compromising their eligibility for elite teams. Please get those payments in (or bring a check to the state meet) by the 22nd. If you have already submitted payment but want to claim the state meet discount, just email us at arml@mathleague.org and we'll help you out.

Also, be sure to spread word to your friends about ARML; we'd love to bring as many students as possible this year, and with 15% of all USAMO and USAJMO qualifiers nationally coming from Northern California this year, with your help this could be the year we place first and second at ARML! :)
