[2018 ARML] - ARML Bus Information

Hi everyone,

This is important information about the ARML bus. (If you're flying to ARML, feel free to disregard this email.)

The bus will load at the San Jose Diridon (Caltrain) Station. Once you're there, look for bus loading spot #3 near the entrance to the train station. Here's a map: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2018ARML/documents/busmap.png
The spot labeled X1 is our bus loading location. Please do not park in the parking spots labeled "Caltrain Employee Parking", marked on the map with yellow and black X's. If needed, you can stop briefly in the parking lot labeled X2 on the map to unload. If you have trouble finding the bus, please call me at 541-206-7651.

All students should arrive for bus loading at 8:30am on Thursday. Do not be late. Once the bus is loaded, it will leave without you if you are not there. Note the earlier time this year!

You may wish to bring games and movies for the bus. We will only have movies if someone brings them! Also, feel free to coordinate games, movies, etc on the SFBA ARML facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/bayareaarml/ If you're not in the group, request to be added and we'll add you. You may also wish to bring a (refillable) water bottle and a pillow/blanket if you're planning to sleep on the bus.

We have a team tradition of wearing our oldest ARML t-shirts on the bus. I will wear a shirt from 2008, and I'm excited to see your ARML shirts from past years.

If you have any questions about the bus, please ask! See you soon!

Best,
Moor

[2018 ARML] - Reminder: final practice on Saturday!

Hi everyone,

Our next (and final) practice will be this Saturday 2:00pm-5:30pm at Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto. (See the website https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2018ARML/ for more info.) Note that it's a longer practice than usual. Please make an extra effort to come to practice (on time) for this final weekend before ARML.

During the final 15-30 minutes of practice, we'll stop doing math and have a team meeting about the trip. This is also your chance to ask questions about whatever is on your mind. :)

You can find practice materials from past practices online on the practice website. As usual, username=sfba and password=arml. You may wish to see the practice notes page for this week on what we covered each week.

Best,
Moor

Re: [2018 ARML] - ARML 2018 Itinerary

Slight correction; the dates for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are wrong.  The correct dates are Thursday, May 31st through Sunday, June 3rd.  This will be corrected in the updated version.

For those of you who have done this before, notice that the Stratosphere trip will be on Friday instead of Saturday.  That's because ARML is not organizing a Friday night event this year, just handing out pizza after the Team and Power rounds.  We will also not be going to dinner at the Stratosphere due to the tighter schedule (only going up the tower), so you'll need to pick up pizza before leaving.

Also, the Super Relay is not being held on Friday night like in the past.  We'll be organizing a Super Relay within our group immediately preceding Casino Night.  If you're flying home on Saturday, we'll send copies to the airport so you can race against each other while waiting for your flight.

See you next week in Las Vegas!

P.S. Chaperones, I'll be sending you the staff version of the itinerary momentarily with a few extra items.

[2018 ARML] - Want extra t-shirts?

Hi Everyone,

We're down to the last two weeks before ARML! Thanks for all your hard work at practice so far. For those of you who haven't turned in permission slips yet, expect to start getting increasingly urgent emails from Kendra about turning them in. At this point, we can no longer accept permission forms at practice, so they will need to be mailed to the address on the website.

As for t-shirts, the group has decided on the Pascal's Triangle design. If you are interested in purchasing extra shirts, you must purchase them online by May 23. You can go to http://mathleague.org/armlshirts.php to place your order. Remember that these are adult sizes. You will be issued one t-shirt corresponding to your team assignment and the size you indicated when you signed up for ARML, but if you think you may have given us an incorrect size (or not realized they were adult sizes rather than youth sizes), feel free to email us to clarify. Any additional shirts you want to purchase can be ordered through the link above; t-shirts will be distributed after ARML so we don't have a bunch of people running around in tie-dyed shirts impersonating coaches. :D

While I'm on the subject of t-shirts (and in case I forget later), remember that you are required to wear your 2018 team t-shirt on Saturday. Tradition dictates that you wear the oldest ARML shirt you have on the day you travel to Las Vegas; this is not a requirement, but it's, you know, fun. :)

Re: [2018 ARML] - t-shirt voting and roster

Hi all,

Two quick things about the t-shirt survey:

1. Some of the designers also produced alternate-color mockups of their designs, so that you can see what it would look like on a variety of different shirt colors.  If you'd like to see those, I've collected them online here.

2. I misstated the title of one design; it should be "Heron's Formula (back) and SFFT Frog (front)".

Don't forget to get your votes in!

[2018 ARML] - Practice on Sunday this weekend

Hi all,

It's that time of week again... this is your reminder that this weekend we'll have practice on Sunday 5/20, 2pm-5pm, at Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto. (See the website https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2018ARML/ for more info.)

I understand that there is a conflict with ProCo this weekend. For those of you at ProCo this weekend, you might still be able to come to some of practice, and I encourage you to do so if you're able to do so. As always, if you need to miss a practice for any (good) reason, please make sure you fill out the form on the website before practice.

I've uploaded practice materials from the past practices to the practice website. As usual, the username is sfba and the password is arml.

Note that this practice is your last opportunity to hand in a permission form in person -- we cannot accept permission forms at the final practice. If you have not yet turned in a permission form, please bring your (notarized) form to this weekend's practice and hand it to me or Tim.

See you this weekend!

Best,
Moor

[2018 ARML] - t-shirt voting and roster

Okay, our t-shirt designs are in and voting is up.  Deadline to vote is midnight Sunday.  You can see the designs and vote at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/25ZZBDX .  Please spend some time (no more than 5 minutes) at practice Sunday trying to come to a consensus within your teams as to what color you want your team's shirt to be, and what your backup color will be if another team wants the same color.  A1 and A2 are guaranteed pink and black respectively if they want those colors, so if A1 picks pink or A2 picks black they do not need to pick a backup color.

For reference, here is our roster as it currently stands. Please make sure your name is here if you think you are going to ARML:

[2018 ARML] - Practice on *Saturday* at Stanford, please note unusual time

Hi everyone,

Our next practice will be on Saturday 5/12, 1pm-4pm at Stanford (basement of building 380). Please note the earlier than usual time, and the unusual location. See the practice website for parking information and information on the remaining practices: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2018ARML/

The practice absence form is also updated with more dates. Fill it out *before* practice if you need to miss practice, but please make sure to provide a good reason... your team needs you to come in order to have effective practices. :)

Quick reminder for anyone who hasn't yet turned in permission forms: you can do this at practice, and you can find information about it here: http://mathleague.org/armljoin.php.

Moor

[2018 ARML] - Flight update, SAT update, and more

Okay everyone, a few notes for this week:

First, I am extending the deadline for flight rebates one more time, to Thursday at midnight. Please see my previous email (archived at http://sfbaarml2018.blogspot.com/2018/04/2018-arml-arml-update-flights-t-shirts.html) with the specific flights you can purchase for a rebate along with the other relevant details. Also, I am adding a new option: you can claim a $50 rebate for booking an approved flight for Saturday night and sending us the confirmation by Thursday at midnight. In other words, I am offering half rebates if you want to take the bus down and one of the approved flights back. If you have already booked such an itinerary (hi Freya!) we will make this offer retroactive as well.

We are also looking for a couple more students to add to the team, so if any of you haven't signed up yet you have until midnight Wednesday (tomorrow) to do so. And if you know of someone who might be interested, get them to sign up right away. The plan is to have a handful of alternates so that we are sure to field five full teams for ARML even if some people have to drop out. New registrations at this point will not automatically be assigned to an alternate team; rather, we will assign alternates the week of ARML based on attendance at practices.

Thanks to all of you who submitted t-shirt ideas. As soon as we are done organizing the legitimate submissions we will send out a survey for you to vote on. And each team will get a chance to decide on their shirt color at a later practice (so A1, start figuring out what your favorite shade of pink is!).

Also, since some of you are likely to be interested, I wanted to announce that mathleague.org is starting a math contest internship program in the fall. Those of you who are graduating this year or have recently graduated are invited to apply, so I'm mostly talking to seniors and coaches here. You can find out more information at http://mathleague.org/InternshipInfo.pdf and the application at http://mathleague.org/InternshipApplication.pdf. Application deadline is June 10, and I am happy to answer any questions at practice or at ARML.

Finally, for those of you who have inquired about SAT conflicts, here is my handy guide to dealing with that:
Step 0 - Don't register for the SAT on ARML day :) (of course, for some of you that may be too late)
Step 1 - Look into the possibility of moving your SAT to sometime in the fall
Step 2 - If steps 0 and 1 don't work for you, visit https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/k12-educators/coordinating/alternate-test-dates and try to get your school administrators on board for a makeup date the week after ARML; note that this is not guaranteed to work and largely depends on how cooperative your school is
Step 3 - Let us know if there are any outstanding concerns or if there is anything we can do to help you

That's all for now; see you at practice Saturday!

-Tim

[2018 ARML] - The real t-shirt deadline

Okay folks, Freya just sent me a note pointing out a mistake in my last email. Apparently I gave a deadline of May 7th for t-shirt submissions in a previous email, so it makes no sense to extend the deadline to the 6th. So I'm retracting the deadline extension and t-shirt submissions will be due on the 7th as originally announced. :)

-Tim

[2018 ARML] - Flight deadline extended and last call for t-shirts

Hi everyone,

Here's where things stand for ARML at this point: We have five teams from Northern California, and the coaches have assigned everyone to their respective teams. Teams will be announced at practice on Sunday, which gives us time to make any last-minute corrections. To that end, I have included a list below of everyone we believe has signed up and paid to go to ARML. If your name does not appear on this list but you are planning to go to ARML, you must notify us by 6pm Saturday evening (the 5th) or risk being placed on an alternate team. Now, that said, we could always expand to a sixth team if we have enough students, so if you or anyone you know is still on the fence about whether to go to ARML, let us know right away and we'll see what we can do about putting you on a team. At this point, no one who has not paid is guaranteed a spot on the team, so check with us before submitting payment so we can confirm whether we can take you onto the team.

Also, we are still looking for a few students to fly to ARML to balance out the bus-versus-flying numbers, so I am extending the rebate deadline to midnight Sunday. If you are interested in claiming a $100 rebate for taking the approved flights I mentioned in the previous email, book your flights and send us confirmation by midnight Sunday. You can find the approved flights in the email archives on the team web page.

And here's your last reminder to get a t-shirt design to us. We can extend the deadline to midnight on Sunday. See my previous email for details.

-Tim

[2018 ARML] - ARML Local results, practice on *Sunday*!

Hi everyone,

Our next practice will be this Sunday, 2pm-5pm in Pleasanton, at Sun Flower Academy, 6693 Owens Dr, Pleasanton, CA 94588 (same location as last week). You can find more information about practice at the practice website: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2018ARML/. Please note that for this week, parents should not stay at the practice location (unless helping out with practice) due to space constraints.

At the practice website, you can also find a spreadsheet that I've set up to help organize carpools to practice. You can post your information there, and contact others who might want to carpool to practice.

Practice materials from past practices can also be found at the practice website, with the following username and password:
Username: sfba
Password: arml

As always, if you need to miss a practice, please make sure that you fill out the Practice Absence Form on the practice website *before* practice, with a good reason.

As an additional reminder, you can submit your notarized permission slips at practice.

ARML Local scores: Question Mark!, Cant Think, and Swapnils Costco Pizza placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the nation, respectively! (Sorry, the ARML Local website didn't allow me to include apostrophes in team names.) You can find full results at http://www.arml2.com/arml_2018/page/index.php?page_type=public&page=6&show_page=arml_local_results&show_arml_local_result=2018.

See you on Sunday! :)

Best,
